The House of Representatives has voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, making him the first cabinet member to face impeachment in nearly 150 years.

Republicans have voted to impeach US Attorney General Eric García Mayorkas for allegedly failing to address the influx of migrants at the US-Mexico border. The vote, which was largely divided along party lines, is expected to fail in the Democratic-led Senate. Mayorkas is accused of not fulfilling his oath to “well and faithfully discharge the duties” of his office. Immigration has become a contentious issue ahead of the November election, with over 6.3 million migrants entering the US illegally since 2021.

Homeland Security spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg accused Republicans of “trampling on the constitution” instead of working on border issues. Republicans charged Immigration Secretary Mike Mayorkas with failing to enforce immigration policies and lying about border security. The House is unlikely to pass the impeachment effort due to Senate narrow control.
