Korea’s Bak Joo-hyo places seventh in men’s 73kg weightlifting event

Korea’s Bak Joo-hyo finished seventh in the men’s 73-kilogram weightlifting final on Thursday, lifting a total of 334 kilograms across both disciplines.

Bak Joo-hyo began in the snatch with a 146-kilogram attempt but failed. He succeeded with 147 kilograms on his second try but could not lift 150 kilograms on his third attempt.

Entering the clean and jerk with a 147-kilogram snatch already secured, Bak Joo-hyo missed his first attempt at 186 kilograms but successfully lifted 187 kilograms on his second attempt. He failed to lift 196 kilograms on his third attempt, ending with a combined total of 334 kilograms.

Indonesian lifter Rizki Juniansyah claimed gold with an Olympic record 354 kilograms, while 19-year-old Weeraphon Wichuma set a new junior world record with 346 kilograms for silver. Bulgarian lifter Bozhidar Dimitrov Andreev took bronze with 344 kilograms.

China’s Shi Zhiyong, who was a strong contender after leading in the snatch, failed to clear any weight in the clean and jerk, dropping out of the competition.

Bak is the first Korean weightlifter competing in Paris. Upcoming Korean lifters include Yu Dong-ju in the men’s 89 kilograms on Friday, Jang Yeon-hak in the men’s 102 kilograms and Kim Su-hyeon in the women’s 81 kilograms on Saturday, and Park Hye-jeong in the women’s +81 kilograms on Sunday.
