Despite a recent earthquake warning in Japan, air travel between Korea and Japan has seen a 20.8 percent increase so far this month compared to the same period last year.
According to data released Friday by major airport operators, approximately 1.38 million passengers flew between the two countries from August 1 to Tuesday.
This figure represents a 20.8 percent year-over-year growth and a 6.3 percent increase from the previous month.
Earlier this month, a significant earthquake alert was issued in Japan following a 7.1 magnitude quake in Miyazaki Prefecture. However, this did not substantially affect the volume of travelers on routes to Japan.
Between the Liberation Day holiday on August 15 and last Sunday, about 269,000 people traveled on flights to Japan, marking a 21.4 percent rise from the same period last year, despite numerous flight cancellations caused by a typhoon.
“Given the ongoing weakness of the yen and the availability of affordable flight tickets, primarily offered by low-cost carriers, travel demand to Japan is anticipated to persist for the foreseeable future,” said an air travel industry watcher.
